Reading a Wi-Fi password out loud is one of modern life's small miseries. "Capital T, lowercase r, the number four — no, the digit, not the word." A Wi-Fi QR code ends the ritual: your guest points their phone's camera at a printed square, taps the prompt that appears, and they're on the network. No typing, no spelling, no app to install.

How a Wi-Fi QR code actually works

A Wi-Fi QR code doesn't contain a link. It contains your network's credentials, written in a compact text format that phones have agreed to understand. A typical code encodes a string like this:

Because the credentials are baked directly into the pattern, this is a static QR code: it works forever, needs no internet connection to be read, and depends on no company's server. One practical note: if your network name or password contains characters like semicolons, colons, commas, or backslashes, the format requires them to be escaped. A good generator handles that automatically; just type the password as-is.

iPhones and Androids join from the camera app

No special scanner is needed on either platform. On any remotely recent iPhone, open the built-in Camera app, point it at the code, and tap the "Join Network" banner. On Android, the stock camera shows a similar one-tap connect prompt (Google Lens covers older devices). The phone reads the network name, password, and security type straight from the code and handles the rest.

The scan works even when the phone has no internet connection, which is exactly the situation your guest is in. There's no page to load and no server to reach; the credentials come straight off the paper.

The honest security note

Here's the part many guides skip: your Wi-Fi password is embedded in the image in plain text. Anyone who scans the code, or a photo of the code, has your password, and most scanning apps will happily display it. A Wi-Fi QR code is a convenience feature, not a security feature.

The rule of thumb: treat the image like the password itself. In practice:

  • Put it on a guest network. Most modern routers can broadcast a separate guest SSID that's isolated from your personal devices, printers, and smart-home gear. Point the QR code at that network, not your main one.
  • Post it where the right people are. A card inside your café or entryway is seen only by people you've already let in. A code taped to a street-facing window is a public password.
  • Don't share the image casually. Texting or posting the picture is texting or posting the password.

Where Wi-Fi QR codes earn their keep

  • Offices. A framed code at reception gets visitors onto the guest network without a trip to IT.
  • Home. Babysitters, in-laws, and houseguests connect themselves while you finish making coffee.

Print ideas that hold up

  • A framed card by the door, the Airbnb classic. It looks intentional and survives cleaning day.
  • Laminated table cards for cafés and waiting rooms. Lamination keeps spills and fingerprints from degrading scans.
  • A page in the house manual or welcome binder, alongside checkout instructions.
  • A small card taped inside a cabinet or by the router at home, handy without being on display.

Two tips regardless of format: print the network name in plain text next to the code so people know what they're joining, and always test-scan a printed sample with a phone that has never joined the network before you make ten of them. Keep the code dark-on-light and don't shrink it smaller than a postage stamp.

Do Wi-Fi QR codes expire?

A static Wi-Fi code cannot expire — ever. The "my QR code stopped working" horror stories come from dynamic codes, which encode a short redirect URL owned by a provider; when the trial ends, the subscription lapses, or the provider shuts down, the code dies. To be fair, paid dynamic services are genuinely worth it in some cases: scan analytics, or an editable destination under a huge print run you can't afford to redo. But those benefits apply to codes that point at links. For link-based codes, you can also get most of that flexibility free by pointing a static code at a URL you control, such as your own page or a Google Drive file, and changing what's behind it later. A Wi-Fi code, though, contains no URL at all: there's nothing to redirect and nothing to track, so static is simply the right tool.

The one honest tradeoff: if you change your Wi-Fi password, the old code stops connecting people. The fix is to generate a new one and reprint: a minute of work, at no cost.
